Subject: Great Lakes Higher Education Corp 2014-2015 Career Ready Internship Grant
**This competition was just announced and requires a very quick turnaround.
Please note the deadlines below.
Nominations are due at the Graduate School on April 7, 2014.
Deadline for internal competition is: To Be Determined.
Great Lakes Higher Education Corporation seeks to provide funding to eligible colleges and universities that develop programs to create new paid internship opportunities for students with remaining financial need. Unpaid internships, which offer students the opportunity to gain work experience in their field of study while going to college, shouldn't be a luxury available only to those who can afford to go without a salary.
For many college juniors and seniors, who go to class, study, and hold down a job to survive financially, taking an unpaid internship can seem completely out of reach. Do they add the extra hours to their already busy schedules? Do they take time off their regular jobs and end up wondering which bill goes unpaid?
While wealthier peers, who can afford to work without pay, take unpaid internships and reap their benefits, most students with financial need simply cannot find a way to take an unpaid internship. This grant will help students with need gain "internship intangibles," including opportunities to get real-world experience in their major and build a network of connections that will help them land good jobs in their chosen fields.
Grants of up to $150,000 each will be available to nonprofit, Title IV-eligible, four-year higher education institutions located in Iowa, Minnesota, Ohio, or Wisconsin. The grant period for the 2014-2015 Career Ready Internship grant is August 1, 2014, through August 31, 2015.
UW-Madison may submit one application, although multiple departments may offer internships. This may require a coordinated effort.
