Every graduate student should take advantage of the opportunities available to them to supplement their training while at UW–Madison. Beyond Graduate School is a professional development program designed especially for master’s students in any discipline. The site offers on-demand video lessons, workbooks and worksheets, virtual events and webinars, and more to take you through a successful job search process.
Here’s what you can find on Beyond Graduate School:
- Self-assessment. To get started, watch the short video “How to use this platform” and take the self-assessment. The assessment asks about your preparedness on various job-ready topics like resume and cover letter writing, networking, career goals, and communicating your skills and experience. Based on the assessment, you receive a recommendation of where to start. For instance, my recommendation was networking and I received a related set of modules and a workbook.
- Job Search Strategy Course. This course shares what employers value about your degree, what to do if you don’t have a career plan, how to authentically network, and the limits of resumes. It also presents a timeline for finding a new job and managing your job search.
- Deep dive modules. Explore the modules that will help you develop the skills and knowledge you need to job search with success. Module topics include: finding your career, LinkedIn, networking, finding and applying for jobs, interviewing, academic skills, and building your career. Check out new content like avoiding LinkedIn scams and how to find people to network with.
- Career Interview Library. This is an underrated resource! Search the video library for one-on-one interviews with people from a variety of fields with master’s degrees. You’ll hear how people navigated the job market, landed their jobs, and built their careers.
The site has recently been updated to reflect the needs and interests of master’s students as a result of directly talking to them about their job search and career goals, which makes it even more relevant. Log in to Beyond Graduate School today and watch GradConnections for upcoming events.
