Tips for Grads: How to say no unapologetically

By Foram Gathia, PhD student

Learning to say no unapologetically is a crucial skill for graduate students to master as they navigate the demands of academia. Here are some strategies to effectively assert boundaries without guilt:

  • Prioritize your commitments. Understand your limits and commitments before agreeing to new tasks or responsibilities. Assess whether taking on additional work aligns with your academic and personal goals. If it doesn’t, be prepared to decline politely.
  • Practice assertive communication. When declining a request, be direct and firm but respectful. Clearly communicate your reasons for saying no and offer alternatives if possible. Express gratitude for the opportunity but maintain your stance firmly.
  • Learn to set boundaries. Establish clear boundaries around your time, energy, and resources. Recognize that it’s okay to prioritize your wellbeing and academic goals. Be consistent in enforcing these boundaries to avoid overcommitting yourself.
  • Avoid over-explaining or justifying your decision. You don’t owe anyone a detailed explanation for saying no. Keep your response concise and to the point. Remember that your time and energy are valuable, and it’s okay to protect them.
  • Seek support from mentors and peers. Surround yourself with individuals who understand the pressures of graduate school and can offer guidance and support. Discuss your challenges about setting boundaries and seek advice on how to handle difficult situations.

By mastering the art of saying no unapologetically, graduate students can protect their time, energy, and well-being while staying focused on their academic and personal goals.
