About the Physics Program

The UW Physics Department awarded its first Ph.D. in 1899. Since then our students have earned degrees in virtually every area of physics, and our faculty have played key roles in a myriad of important research efforts. We have strong programs in Astrophysics; Atomic, Molecular & Optical Physics; Condensed Matter Physics; High Energy and Particle Physics; Plasma Physics; Quantum Computing; and String Theory.

Additional Policy

Typical funding is through 50% assistantships. Virtually 100% of enrolled students are funded for the duration of their degree. All programs are full time and require full time student enrollment during fall and spring terms.

Many available online programs can be completed almost entirely online with all online programs offering at least 50 percent or more of the program work online. Some online programs have an on-campus component that is often designed to accommodate working schedules.
