Join Orange Hat Publishing, Wisconsin’s largest indie book publisher, for experience with all stages of the publishing process. Review submissions and provide notes to authors. Edit manuscripts in partnership with authors. Manage publishing projects at all stages. Provide creative input on covers, illustrations, and interior layouts. Prepare files for printing and manage online records with printers and distributors. Market Orange Hat and our books in coordination with authors. Attend book launches and other events. Experience the day-to-day joys and frustrations of entrepreneurship alongside owner and editor-in-chief Michael Braun, a three-time graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison (BA, English, 2006; MA and PhD, Communication Science, 2011, 2013) and the small Orange Hat team.
Orange Hat is a small company with big responsibilities available for a graduate student interested in editing, publishing, marketing, and entrepreneurship. Work remotely or in our office space in Wauwatosa, WI. Flexible hours and few meetings; most work can be completed anytime, not just during business hours.
Qualities of candidate:
The best candidate for this position will love books, be interested in writing and editing (if not a writer themselves), and feel called to help authors on their journey in publishing. In addition to producing awesome books, our goal is to ensure authors themselves have a wonderful experience publishing in which they feel involved in the process and valued. The best candidate will embrace a role that involves a lot of project management with most communication via email.
Relevant Knowledge and Skills:
- Editorial Expertise: Avid reader with a critical eye for detail and an ear for tone, voice, and language. Experienced in both writing and editing.
- Project Management: Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, often at different stages, while maintaining deadlines and quality.
- Client & Team Communication: Strong written communication skills and a customer service-oriented mindset, including experience collaborating with high-achieving, creative professionals (i.e. authors).
- Technical Proficiency: Skilled with traditional office software including Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Drive, etc.). Comfortable and effective in remote work environments, with experience managing digital workflows and meeting frequent deadlines.
- Bonus Skill: Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite (e.g., InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator).
