University of Wisconsin–Madison

After Admission

For newly admitted students

The Graduate School offers support and resources to help you transition to life as a graduate student:

  • New Graduate Student Welcome, the orientation day for all new graduate students
  • Welcome Week programming ranging from productivity tips to networking opportunities and national speakers
  • Checklists of important tasks to complete before and when you arrive to campus
  • Onboarding information to help you get settled as a graduate student.
Two students lean over a printed sheet of paper with a bingo card and smile.
Students sitting behind a table look to a speaker while smiling and laughing.
Two students pose for a photo with the Bucky Badger mascot, who is holding up his paws in a W shape.
A student gestures and talks into a microphone while seated in an audience.

Request to change your admission term

When you’re admitted, you agree to start in the term you applied for. UW–Madison only allows term changes in extraordinary circumstances beyond your control, such as:

  • medical reasons, natural disasters, or other unexpected events
  • delays in getting visa documents before the term begins

Term changes are not allowed for personal reasons, like taking a gap year or starting a job.

You must request a term change before your original start term begins, and it can only be to the next adjacent semester. Contact your graduate program for details.
