It’s no simple feat to find a better way to detect neurodegenerative diseases like ALS and Alzheimer’s, Lauren Fields knows. But with support from a 2026 Schmidt Science Fellowship, Fields will build on the research she conducted and skills she learned as a PhD student at UW–Madison to look for a way to tell when patients have early signs of ALS and other diseases.

Peter Kinsley, PhD, a senior research and policy analyst at the Graduate School for 8 years, passed away peacefully at home with his family on February 12, 2026. Peter’s contributions to UW–Madison were numerous and far-reaching, spanning from the data visualizations he produced to the many data analyses, special projects, and data briefs he published.
Carlos is a PhD candidate whose research informs biomedical applications and chemical production. His doctoral research uses molecular dynamics simulations to model interactions between inorganic nanoparticles and model biological membranes.

The Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) has released its final report on the PhD Career Pathways project, a nationwide initiative involving 75 universities, including UW–Madison. The Graduate School has introduced several major initiatives aimed at broadening students’ career preparation.
Beth Meyerand, associate dean in the Graduate School, has been appointed Vice Provost and Dean of the Graduate School at the University of Rhode Island, effective March 1.
