Master’s student in Dairy Sciences
Whether it’s informing lab mates about important events, sharing growth opportunities, or even remembering birthdays, master’s student Pablo De Caso Udave helps maintain a strong sense of community within the Cabrera research lab in Animal and Dairy Sciences.
“I aim to give back this sense of community that I experienced when I first arrived at Madison,” Pablo said.
He came to Madison after working as a farm manager upon graduation from his undergraduate institution. He wanted to deepen his knowledge and specialize in dairy sciences and dairy management — a fast-paced, constantly evolving field. He began exploring graduate programs and connecting with potential mentors.
“Through that process, it became clear that few institutions could match UW–Madison, not only because of the strength of its research programs, but also because of the state’s dairy tradition,” Pablo said. “Being part of a place like this, where science and industry are so closely connected, creates an ideal environment to grow both professionally and personally.”
It’s good for UW–Madison that Pablo chose to come here, too. His faculty mentor, Animal and Dairy Sciences Professor Victor Cabrera, said that Pablo is “the glue that holds the lab together”.
Pablo’s research focuses on identifying risk factors for mastitis in organic dairy farms, as well as understanding how organic dairy production has evolved in the United States. He values the opportunity to contribute to the Wisconsin Idea through this work.
“Through my research in organic dairy, I’ve enjoyed being part of efforts that translate data into practical insights,” Pablo said. “Knowing that our work can support both the scientific community and dairy producers makes the experience especially rewarding.”
