The following was sent to graduate students, with graduate program contacts copied, on Thursday, February 27, 2025.
Dear Graduate Students,
We want to take a moment to reaffirm the university’s commitment to supporting current graduate students, amid the national uncertainty of the extramural funding landscape. Recent guidance to schools and colleges that calls for careful consideration of new admissions offers also calls on departments to do their best to honor existing funding commitments for continuing graduate students.
Sustaining your academic and professional success are a priority of the university. Please see below for resources to help you navigate stress and uncertainty and maintain your mental health. The university is working hard to minimize disruptions to our mission and to keep the community apprised on the latest developments. Please continue to refer to the Federal Relations website for information.
The dedication, talent, and contributions of our graduate students play a vital role in advancing the university’s research and academic mission. If you have questions, we encourage you to connect with your Director of Graduate Study or with the Graduate School.
Sincerely,
William J. Karpus
Dean of the Graduate School
Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Let’s Talk for Graduate Students
Starting Monday, February 24, UHS Mental Health Services is offering a weekly Let’s Talk for graduate students for the remainder of the Spring semester as an opportunity to process and navigate stress and uncertainties. Mental Health providers will be available on Mondays from 3:00 – 5:00 pm to provide a 20-minute consultation. If you join the virtual session and the provider is with someone, please join the virtual waiting room and the provider will admit you once the space is available.
Keep in mind that Let’s Talk is not a substitute for ongoing counseling and doesn’t constitute mental health treatment, but consultants can listen to specific problems, help explore solutions, and introduce you to what it’s like to speak to a member of our staff.
Quicker Access to UHS Group Counseling
Students no longer need an Access appointment to connect with UHS Group Counseling. Simply call 608-256-5600 (option 2) or schedule your pre-group orientation online at MyUHS.
The pre-group orientation is a one-on-one phone call with the group facilitator, where they will review the topics covered in the group and give students a chance to ask questions. Learn more and view the spring Group Counseling schedule.
