UW–Madison PhD student Emma Hammond and professor Catherine Marler have received the prestigious Gilliam Fellowship from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI).

PhD student Ryan Martinez and Assistant Professor Jake Brunkard have received the prestigious Gilliam Fellowship from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). Brunkard’s Genetics lab investigates how plant cells monitor their nutrient availability. Within that area, Martinez studies a family of plants native to Australia that grows particularly well in areas with fewer available nutrients.
Two student-advisor pairs at UW–Madison have received Gilliam Fellowships for Advanced Study from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). HHMI Gilliam Fellowships have a twofold mission: to support underrepresented PhD students to pursue scientific research and to foster more inclusive academic environments at institutions that are committed to advancing diversity and inclusion in the sciences.
